Crested Butte, nestled in the heart of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, is renowned for its stunning landscapes and vibrant community. As environmental challenges mount, local organizations and residents are actively engaged in preserving the area’s natural beauty through various conservation initiatives and sustainable practices.
High Country Conservation Advocates
Since 1977, High Country Conservation Advocates (HCCA) has been at the forefront of environmental protection in the Gunnison Valley. Originating from efforts to prevent mining on Mount Emmons, HCCA has expanded its mission to safeguard public lands, water resources, and wildlife. Their work encompasses advocacy, education, and community action, aiming to address threats like mining, development, and climate change.
Sustainable Crested Butte
Established in 2015, Sustainable Crested Butte focuses on reducing waste and promoting sustainable practices within the community. One of their notable achievements includes the successful campaign to ban single-use plastic bags, which took full effect in 2018. The organization continues to lead initiatives such as the Waste-Free Events program, helping local events minimize their environmental footprint.
Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association
The Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association (CBMBA), founded in 1983, is dedicated to building and maintaining sustainable trails. Through their professional trail and stewardship crew, the Crested Butte Conservation Corps (CBCC), they address the impacts of increased trail usage by maintaining trails, clearing deadfall, and educating users on responsible backcountry behavior. Their efforts ensure that the region’s trails remain accessible and environmentally sound.
Town of Crested Butte’s Open Space and Trails
The Town of Crested Butte collaborates with community partners to conserve open spaces for wildlife, watershed protection, and recreation. Since 1992, the town has supported open space conservation, partnering with organizations like the Crested Butte Land Trust and the Trust for Public Lands. These efforts have led to the acquisition and stewardship of cherished trails such as Woods Walk, Lupine, Green Lake, and Baxter Gulch.
Addressing Climate Change
Recognizing the impacts of climate change, including warmer summers and altered snow patterns, Crested Butte has developed a Climate Action Plan. This plan outlines strategies to mitigate environmental challenges and promote sustainability within the community.
Through the combined efforts of these organizations and the community’s dedication, Crested Butte continues to be a leader in environmental stewardship, ensuring that its natural beauty and resources are preserved for future generations.
